This practice is neurodiverse-affirming
Neurodiversity specifically refers to people with brain's that function differently to the standard neurological processing patterns expected and catered for by society. This includes conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and others.
Neurodiverse-affirming therapy is a step away from traditional therapy which is based on the idea that people who were neurodiverse required therapy to 'fix' or change them. Evidence now shows that this premise is false and detrimental to the mental health of individuals.
Neurodiverse- affirming therapy focuses on supporting an individual by using their unique skills and profile, to help them to thrive in a world that is designed for neuro-typical people (the opposite of neurodiverse).
'If a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment that it grows in, you don't fix the flower'.
At Grass Roots OT I am committed to providing a safe and neurodiverse- affirming therapy experience.
