DIR Floortime therapy may look a bit different to traditional therapy.
'The objectives of the DIR® Model are to build healthy foundations for social, emotional, and intellectual capacities rather than focusing exclusively on skills and isolated behaviors. DIR Floortime is most commonly utilized with children with educational, social-emotional, mental health, and/or developmental challenges. DIR Floortime has become most widely known as an approach to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) .'

DIR Floortime is an evidence based, play based, neurodiverse- affirming model of practice, based on 'DIR' theory by Dr Stanley Greenspan.
In this model:
D is for Developmental: Based on current understandings of social- emotional development, and how this impacts overall human development starting from birth.
I is for Individual: Acknowledging the individual differences in every person. These may be developmental differences (everyone develops in their own time), differences in how a person perceives and relates to the world, and differences in how a person regulates (where regulation refers to having the right energy to match the task). Taking into account individual differences is essential for appropriate and effective therapy.
R is for Relationship: Based on the foundational knowledge that relationships and emotional connections fuel development, as humans are social creatures. Human beings learn and grow through relationships.
Floortime: The practice of getting down on the floor to play, engage and build relationship!
